SCOTUS
First Round Draft Picks

My first selection for appointment to the Court is Justice Roger Wollman of the 8th Circuit Court of Appeals. He has South Dakota Values. He understands our people and our State. Justice Wollman served as Chief Justice of the South Dakota Supreme Court and has been on the Court of Appeals for over twenty years. Ronald Reagan appointed Justice Wollman to the Court of Appeals. His brother Harvey was Governor of South Dakota and his son Tom currently serves as the Lincoln County States Attorney. Justice Wollman is my first choice.
My second choice is Theodore Olson. Mr. Olson most recently served as Solicitor General of the United States. As Solicitor General he argued cases on behalf of the United States. He is qualified, of the highest ethical character and solidly conservative.

Both selections are slightly older than I might like but never less their character and judicial philosophy override the age consideration.

They are strong candidates, but I don't agree that their strengths trump the age concern. Someone who is 55 will serve 30 years -- twice as long as a 70-year-old will.
Unfortunately, Bush already feels like a lame duck, and I am pretty dissatisfied with his legacy to-date. He needs to make sure that his SC picks change the face of the Court for a LONG time. He might not do anything more important in the next three years. We need a long-serving justice.
